Hillers Girls Track Wins TVL Championship

Westwood won the boys' meet while Hopkinton took first place in the girls' meet.

While the boys’ meet went down to the wire, things remained status quo in the girls’ meet. Despite only getting four individual wins, the Westwood Wolverines walked away with the boys’ league title beating Norton by only 3.67 points while the Hopkinton Hillers once again won the girls meet. “This meet is not necessarily about how many first places you get. It’s about depth and we’re very lucky to have a lot of great finishes across the board,” Westwood boys’ head coach Joe Mascia said. “These guys have worked tirelessly since the beginning of the season so they deserve it.” Bobby McLaughlin came up big for the Wolverines, completing one of the more tougher doubling efforts in the mile and the two mile. “He ran two really great races and it…

Runners Just Can’t Beat the Heat

Unseasonably warm temperatures kept 5,000 runners from competing in the Boston Marathon, but even those who ran were impacted by the warmth.

In case you weren’t in or near Hopkinton on Monday, the Boston Marathon was run on the hottest day so far this spring. Temperatures reached well in to the 80s and some reports say the even eclipsed the 90-degree mark. The unseasonably warm temperatures didn’t stop 22,000 people from starting the race in town on their way to Copley Square. There were 58 registered runners from Hopkinton , 49 who opted to start the race.  But not everyone that started was able to make it all 26.2 miles. “Pushing my muscles so they scream as they do in a typical race is expected and even satisfying when it is over but Monday was more about pushing my body's ability to cool itself - and that isn't why I run,” John Ralston said . Ralston was one of four …

Boston Marathon Issues Heat Advisory, Offers Deferment

Inexperienced marathoners are warned not to run on Monday.

Runners scheduled to run the Boston Marathon on Monday were advised to do so with caution. Because of the expected high temperatures of nearly 90 degrees on Monday, the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) issued an email statement on Saturday morning which offered a deferment to any official runner who would like to postpone his or her participation until 2013. “This applies to official entrants only who either have claimed or will claim their bib number packet at the John Hancock Sports & Fitness Expo through Sunday evening at the Seaport World Trade Center in South Boston,” the statement read. For the 20th year, Elmwood Elementary School in Hopkinton welcomed the Kenyan Elite Runners to town.

Marathon spirit is taking over Hopkinton. The Town Common is decorated, the starting platforms are built and the road markers have been painted. Now all that's left is for 27,000 runners to come to Hopkinton and begin the race to Boston. Yesterday morning students, staff and families at the Elmwood School welcomed the elite runners from Kenya.  The ceremony started at 10 a.m. and featured Elmwood Principal Ilene Silver, the Chairman of the Board of Selectmen Todd Cestari, the Kenyan Ambassador Elkanah Odembo and speakers from John Hancock and the Boston Athletic Association.  This year marked the 20th anniversary of the Kenyan runners visiting Elmwood before the race.
