Oh My: Patient Makes Fashion Statement; Fox Acts 'Out of Character'

We report the odd police-related news from the region.

Mario Kart? A man called Hopkinton Police this week to report that another driver threw trash out of his car window. The caller said he honked his horn, and in return, was given the finger. An officer spoke with the alleged litterbug, who said he had just tossed a banana peel. Unlike the video game Mario Kart, this did not result in any nearby cars spiraling out of control. It's free and comfortable; why wouldn't you wear it? A woman called Milford police to report her daughter was discharged from the hospital, but had gone to a relative's workplace still wearing the hospital gown. She reported her daughter might still be walking around Main Street with the johnny. I know this fox, and he never acts this way. A Northborough resident …

LETTER: Graziano's Financial Background is Good for the Schools

As Troy Mick's tenure on the School Committee comes to an end, he said he believes Jon Graziano has the right skill set to be an integral part of the School Committee.

Submitted by Troy Mick My name is Troy Mick and I am writing in support of Jon Graziano for School Committee.  I have had the pleasure of working with Jon through his role on the Appropriations Committee and specifically as liaison to the School Committee and am always impressed by his well researched and thoughtful comments and answers as we worked though the school budgets. Jon’s education and business background in financial planning and process improvement will be an asset as the School Committee looks at solving many of the issues that exist in our schools today.  Jon will have the ability to bring new ideas to the table and balancing the desire to improve our school system without unnecessarily increasing the tax burden on our entire…

POLL: Should the State Ban School Bake Sales?

State health officials want to put restrictions on school bake sales to discourage unhealthy eating habits, but will this hurt fundraising efforts?

Massachusetts state health officials recently recently approved regulations that would prevent bake sales from being held during school and in the 30 minutes before and after school to discourage unhealthy eating habits. Gov. Deval Patrick has backed down on the regulations after criticism from parents and organizations that say putting restrictions on bake sales would negatively impact fundraising efforts for the schools and nonprofit groups, according to USA Today. Legislation passed in 2010 will still require schools serve healthy snack options in the cafeterias and limit sugary foods. In today's poll question, we're asking: Do you think Gov. Deval Patrick should enforce the bake sale ban to help encourage Massachusetts youth to have …

Submitted by Kim Pucci I am supporting Jean Bertschmann for School Committee because of her proven commitment to excellence in the Hopkinton Schools. I have worked with Jean in multiple capacities over the past 10 years including serving under her leadership on the Superintendent Steering Committee, co-chairing school fundraising events, and collaborating when our tenures of president of the HPTA and Education Foundation overlapped. I have been impressed with her knowledge of the schools, ability to build consensus, and efficiency in managing tasks. With the challenges of the current economy and facilities decisions ahead, it is crucial that we continue to explore creative options to maintain excellence in our schools and plan for the …

Oh My: Torso Delivered to BJ's; Man Should Have Worn a Belt

Our "oh my gosh" police news round-up includes the bizarre, the outrageous, the silly, and the disgusting.

BJ's only sells torsos in bulk. I stole that headline from Westborough Patch blogger Jon McGrath, who commented on a story we had about a woman's torso being mistakenly mailed to BJ's instead of a lab in Florida. "The first clue," McGrath commented, "would have been knowing that BJ's only carries torsos in 12-packs." Officials correctly labeled the package and it was sent on its way. Reason 187 why belts are a good idea.. ..because if you don't wear one, you might have someone call the police on you for indecent exposure. Shrewsbury police got a call last week regarding a man whose back side was exposed. Officers responded and learned the man was simply wearing loose pants. He said he would put on a belt. No commentary is needed.. ...To …
